Abstract
As a child transitions from the primary into the permanent dentition, the general dental practitioner is well placed to spot aberrations in development and eruption. Appropriate clinical and radiographic examination and early referral can simplify or reduce the need for complicated orthodontic treatment, leading to improved aesthetics and well-being of the child. Understanding that maxillary incisor and canine teeth are at risk of becoming impacted is important as is the ability to recognise other less obvious abnormalities such as anterior and posterior crossbites, infraocclusion of primary molars and ectopic eruption of first permanent molars.
