Australian Asylum Policy: The Tampa Effect

Abstract

The Tampa incident redefined Australian asylum policy throughout the world - analysis of quarterly data shows that the 'Tampa effect' for Australia was to reduce asylum applications by more than half - the elements of tough policies, credible enforcement and effective communications came together after the Tampa affair - in this sense the Australian government achieved its goal of deterrence.
