Abstract

The composition of the volatile leaf oil of Ficus exasperata Vahl (Moraceae) is reported. The oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed for its constituents by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The oil is comprised of terpenoids and aliphatic compounds. The quantitatively significant compounds were 1, 8-cineole (13.8%), (?)-phytol (13.7%) and p-cymene (11.4%). In addition, all other compounds were present above 2%. The oil shows no antibacterial activity against the tested organisms (MIC 625ppm).
