Abstract

This manuscript describes a laboratory practice for chemistry teaching, it consists in determination of manganese percentage (m/m) in battery using digital images obtained with a flatbed scanner. 100 mg of battery were digested in nitric acid and oxidized to MnO4 using IO4. Calibration solutions were prepared by successive dilutions of a KMnO4 solution. Calibration solutions and sample solutions were placed in a 96 microwells plate, then, the plaque was scanned and RGB values were extracted from scanned image using ImageJ. Manganese percentage in battery was also carried out using a spectrophotometer at 526 nm, where both methods showed equivalent results at a 95% confidence interval.
