Abstract

Grinding process is affected by many factors, such as the selection of grinding wheel, the dressing condition, and of course the grinding condition. In addition, performance of the grinding wheel changes considerably during the grinding process. It becomes, therefore, important to monitor the dressing as well as the grinding process so that the grinding result required is satisfied. In this study, the acoustic emission (AE) signal is applied to monitor these processes. Dressing process is monitored to generate a grinding wheel surface of constant quality. Grinding process is monitored to define the tool life of the grinding wheel. It is also confirmed that the contact of grinding wheel and workpiece is successfully detected with AE signal, which means that the method is effective as a gap-eliminator. © 1985, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
