Abstract

Introduction: The elderly have a greater potential to experience various diseases, especially degenerative diseases such as hypertension. One of the causes of hypertension is the habit of drinking coffee. Caffeine in coffee can increase blood pressure; so that, the behaviour of consuming coffee for a long period of time can affect hypertension suffered by the elderly in the working area of Public Health Center I Kintamani. Objectives: To determine the correlation between long-term coffee consumption behaviour and hypertension in the elderly in the working area of Public Health Center I Kintamani. Methods: This study employed correlative study with cross-sectional approach. There were 166 respondents recruited as the sample through purposive sampling technique. The data were collected using questionnaire and analysed using Chi-Square statistical test. Results: The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between long-term coffee consumption behaviour and hypertension in the elderly with p-value < 0.001. Conclusion: In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between long-term coffee consumption behaviour and hypertension in the elderly. Further, the health workers should always provide education about controlling coffee consumption behaviour to the community in overcoming hypertension.
