Abstract

A simple model based on optical electronegativity difference has been proposed for calculating the energy gap, refractive index and electronic polarizability of different semiconductors and alkali halides. Correlation between energy gap, refractive index and electronic polarizability are given for II-VI, III-V semiconductors and alkali halides. The calculated values of electronic polarizability are in fair agreement with the values obtained from Lorentz-Lorentz relation. This work highlights the significance of interrelation between energy gap, refractive index and electronic polarizability. The estimated values are then compared with the literature values. There is fair agreement between estimated values and literature values. © 2013 The Author(s).
