Abstract
Septic arthritis of naive joints (SANJ) is the most important musculoskeletal rheuma-tologic emergency. Its promptly diagnosis and early treatment is directly dependent on short-term prognosis. The SANJ is more common in males, between the fourth and sixth decades of life. Most often affects large joints and the usual clinical presentation is a monoarthritis with a great commitment of the global condition. The suspect diagnosis should be followed by the microbiological study of synovial fluid, the introduction of intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy based on empirical epidemiological parameters of the patient and by the hospital admission. In our environment, the emergency management of this condition is heterogeneous both the use of additional lab tests, image tests, the hospital admission and the types of therapeutic approaches. Currently, international guidelines for management of SANJ are based on a few well documented scientific issues and more predominantly in case series as well as expert opinion. This guideline has been developed gathering the most relevant scientific information available in order to provide a useful tool to warrant appropriate and opportune diagnostic and therapeutic assessment of SANJ in emergency units. © iMedPub.
