Abstract
The local climate near a small lake (not exceeding 200 km2) was investigated in this study. The distribution and diurnal changes of air temperature near Lake Toya, Hokkaido, Japan, were measured in spring and summer. The lake effect on the air temperature distribution at the shoreline was observed in the daytime with a copper-constantan thermocouple thermometer set on a car. Air temperature of lake breeze on the northern shore was about 4°C lower than that of offshore wind on the southern shore of Lake Toya. Air temperature was measured at 6 stations located on the northern region of the lake to see how far the lake effects extended. The results showed that the cooling effects of the lake extended inland to about 1.5 km from the lake shore. © 1980, The Society of Agricultural Meteorology of Japan. All rights reserved.
