Abstract

Background: Robots are used throughout healthcare, yet nursing education is behind in offering content and experiences. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate how robots are currently being incorporated into nursing education and to discuss the perceived benefits and challenges experienced by nursing students and educators. Innovation: Three primary types of robotic systems were located within the context of nursing education: Service robots, remote presence robots, and robotic patients. Implications: Robots helped to assist nurses, foster remote learning opportunities, and facilitate skills training. Challenges included simulation fidelity and technological problems. Conclusions: Nurse educators are encouraged to pursue continuing education about robots in healthcare and design learning experiences to prepare students to leverage robots while preserving human elements essential to quality patient care.
