Abstract
Based on the transformation of the forms of violence throughout the twentieth century, the paper questions the hegemonic conception that reads violence since her functionality. After a critical presentation of this thesis, the paper proposes, based on a specific vision about the consistency of social life, two alternative hypotheses to account for what is defined as extreme manifestations of violence. On the one hand, the hypothesis of forms of violence produced by subjectivity in the context of modern condition. On the other hand, the hypothesis of increased collective energies that destabilize institutions.
