Effect of Environmental Education on Public Recycling Behavior in Indonesia

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to examine effect of environmental education on public recycling behavior in Indonesia. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: Recent research in Indonesia shows that environmental education significantly boosts public recycling behavior. Community workshops and interactive sessions have improved waste management practices in urban areas. These initiatives have increased recycling participation and enhanced public awareness. They also promote better waste segregation among households. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Theory of planned behavior (TPB), social cognitive theory (SCT) & diffusion of innovations theory   may be used to anchor future studies on the effect of environmental education on public recycling behavior in Indonesia. Practitioners are encouraged to design and implement tailored environmental education programs that leverage interactive and participatory learning techniques to foster recycling behavior. Policymakers should embed environmental education within formal education curricula and community outreach programs as a strategic tool to bolster recycling behavior.
