Abstract
Preparation of Fe(III)-montmorillonite and its application on the methylene blue photo-degradation under UV illumination have been done. The preparation has been conducted by following steps; preparation of pillaring agent solution, intercalation, and calcination. The characterization of Fe(III)-montmorillonite were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area analysis (SAA) by the BET equation and atomic absorption analysis (AAS). The degradation of methylene blue was carried out by treating with various methodes such as adsorbtion, photocatalyst, photolysis, photo-oxidation, and oxidation. XRD characterization showed that Fe(III)-montmorillonite has basal spacing of 12.23 Ǻ, spesific surface area of 110.513 m 2 g -1 , pores total volume of 158.8 x 10 -3 cm 3 g -1 and pore radius average of 28.74075 Ǻ. The results of methylene blue degradation were analyzed using UV-visible absorpsion spectrophotometry. The best optimum degradation methode is photo-oxidation test on pH 10, 180 minutes, and radiation under UV B illumination by using 0.1 g Fe(III)-montmorillonite for each 500 mL of 10 -4 M methylene blue and 0.025 mL peroxide (H 2 O 2 50%) mL of 10 -4 M. This photo-oxidation test could reduce of methylene blue content untill 92.564 %.
