Abstract

This paper reviews the equiripple and least-squares filter design methods. The trade-off between the two methods is illustrated with numerical examples, where ideal filters are approximated by both equiripple and least-squares FIR filters. We explain the motivation behind the classical filter design methods, and then extend this reasoning to develop new design criteria for certain multirate filter design problems.
