Abstract

In a context of high masculinisation of rural labour markets, self-employment becomes a key option for those women who try to consolidate or to set up an economic activity. This research, based on a qualitative case study in a Spanish LEADER area (Sierra del Segura, Albacete), focuses on local networks supporting female self-employment in rural areas and the impact of the economic crisis on these networks. The results highlight the importance of women's business associations (formal networks) and local leaderships (informal networks) as strengthening sources of support. Likewise, the economic crisis has destroyed the large part of this support system. On the opposite side, the findings state the emergent role of the Social and Solidarity Economy promoting women entrepreneurship.
