Olfactory function in patients with Parkinson's disease

Abstract

Olfactory acuity of 22 patients with Parkinson's disease was measured repeatedly and compared with that of 37 age- and sex-matched controls. Ten of 22 patients with Parkinson's disease showed significant decrease (p < 0.05) in olfactory acuity. Nine of these 10 patients had moderately or rapidly progressive disease. A significant correlation (p < 0.05) was found between rate of progression of the disease and decreased olfactory acuity. This finding may be of prognostic value. © 1975.
