Abstract

This study aims to determine the characteristics of oil and gas produced from the coal pyrolysis process. The problem in the coal-using industry so far is that it does not capture hydrocarbon gas as an energy source, but only utilizes the high heat energy produced for heating steam power plant furnaces. The method used was experimental pyrolysis in the laboratory, at a temperature of 500°C for 5 and 6 hours. The results obtained, the calorific value contained in coal of 6117.55Kcal/kg is included in the Sub-bittuminous type, while the results obtained in the pyrolysis of coal are gas and oil with a fraction (C5-C12) which is classified as gasoline type oil. The coal pyrolysis method can be used by industry as an alternative method of producing energy sources in the future.
