This book is intended for medical students studying for the Professional Examination in Microbiology. It aims to give a precise account of medical bacteriology, but also contains notes on mycology and parasitology. The book is divided into 6 sections, the first of which, entitled "Bacterial biology", covers the structure, taxonomy, nutrition and growth of bacteria, as well as bacterial genetics, laboratory methods, and sterilization and disinfection. Section 2 covers medically important bacteria including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, pneumococci, enterobacteria, Pseudomonas and other Gram negative bacilli, Vibrio, Aeromonas, Campylobacter, Helicobacter, parvobacteria, Corynebacterium and related bacteria, Mycobacterium, Actinomyces, Nocardia, Neisseria, Moraxella. Bacillus, Clostridium, Bacteroides and other non-sporing anaerobes, Lactobacillus, Legionella and related genera, spirochaetes, and Mycoplasma. The third section, "Bacterial disease", covers normal flora, host-parasite relationship, epidemiology, respiratory tract infections, diarrhoeal diseases, enteric fever, gastritis and peptic ulcer, diseases due to toxins, urinary tract infections, meningitis, sepsis, infective endocarditis, pyrexia of unknown origin, tuberculosis and leprosy, infections of bone and joint, sexually transmitted diseases, infections of the eye, zoonoses, infection of immunocompromised patients, infection in hospital, and infection in general practice. Sections 4, 5 and 6 cover treatment and prevention of bacterial disease, medical mycology, and medical parasitology, respectively. The publication concludes with a list of recommended reading and a subject index.
