Abstract

AbstractLike Arab geomancy from which it stems, the divinatory technique practiced on Madagascar has mathematical properties that have often been described in abstract terms independently of the mental processes activated by diviners. Fieldwork since 2000 has led the author to look beyond such formal statements in an effort to discover the mental operations enacting these properties. This approach is original in that researchers from anthropology, cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence have pooled their knowledge in pursuit of a multidisciplinary methodology. The results herein shed new light on the question of the rationality of knowledge and actions in societies with oral traditions.
