A History of the Ecological Sciences, Part 22: Early European Naturalists in Eastern North America

Abstract

Many explorers of foreign lands and seas brought back to Europe plants and animals for authorities to study and describe, but some explorers were also naturalistswho published their own observations. Previously(Egerton 1976, 1977) I surveyed contributions by early naturalists to American natural history that might be of interest to ecologists. Now I will go into more detail about fewer naturalists, but before doing so, let us view them within a broader context.
