Abstract

Resolution In the linear tlme-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) Is examined both theoretically and experimentally. A model based on probability theory Is developed and used to calculate Ion peak shapes and mass resolution. Model calculations suggest that mass resolution In the TOFMS can be greatly increased through the use of a molecular beam sample source. Mass resolution of 4650 (fwhm) was obtained experimentally, In excellent agreement with model calculations. © 1985, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
