Abstract
Specialists agree that in most companies up to 20% of all activity is directly concerned with the exchange of information, for hospitals this figure is even higher (30%). The main communication hardware required for a 1000 bed hospital is listed and the costs involved in financing and maintaining this equipment as well as training staff are set out. The major part of the article sets down a number of requirements that should be met when installing a hospital information system; in this context a brief review of the technology to date is presented.
