Abstract

The most common cybercrime technique that coerces victims into divulging private information, such as bank account numbers, passwords, and account IDs, is phishing. Such cyber attacks are frequently initiated via phone calls, instant messages, and emails. Even though the strategies for preventing these cyberattacks are constantly being updated, the final result is still insufficient. However, the number of phishing emails has skyrocketed in recent years, indicating the need for more sophisticated and efficient ways to combat them. Although many techniques have been developed to filter phishing emails, a comprehensive solution is still required. As far as we are aware, this is the first survey that focusses on identifying phishing emails using machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) techniques. The many cutting-edge NLP techniques currently being used to detect phishing emails at different phases of the attack are analysed in this study, with a focus on machine learning techniques. These methods undergo a comparative evaluation and analysis. The problem, its immediate solution space, and the anticipated future research directions are all conveyed in this way.
