Abstract

A discussion about ethics for professional foresters can begin with the philosophical foundations. Ethics has a long tradition in philosophy, and many philosophers have addressed the subject in general and as it relates specifically to professionals and to the environment. A comprehensive system of ethical rules is elusive, however; professionals must recognize the case-specific context of ethical decisions and gain experience in making good ethical decisions. Of special interest to foresters are the role of ethics and social groups in influencing objectivity of science, and the inclusion of nonutilitarian values in nature.
