Poperly organized information systems are a prerequisite for the efficient administration of public health services, and their planning should be given high priority. At a recent Conference on Health Information Systems, held by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, emphasis was placed on the need for a critical assessment of users' needs and on ways of improving the quality of data input. Alternative ways of developing such systems were also discussed. The work of the Conference is summarized.
