This article is an editorial that introduces a debate about what should be the IS core, presented in the form of a series of short papers. Reader participation is encouraged. Articles are sought that bring new perspectives or present different critiques from the ones presented. Background is given for this debate. The editor's personal view of this debate is presented. It is concluded by the editor that this debate about information science is an ongoing one and one that won't be resolved with the publication of the papers in this issue.
