Abstract

Neuropathic pain is a condition that caused by a lesion or somatosensory system disease. This condition affects to the general health of the human. However, the systematic review of the worldwide or the global burden of neuropathic pain is not available. The objective of the study was to review the neuropathic pain global burden including causes, prevalence, sex influence, cost, and the quality of life. We conducted a systematic review search in PubMed and Cochrane according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline (PRISMA). We identified 60 eligible articles for a qualitative study. From these articles, we didn't find a neuropathic pain burden in Indonesia. Post Herpetic Neuralgia related to the Herpes Zoster study was the most researched of the neuropathic pain study. The global prevalence of neuropathic pain reached 2.6-11%. Female was the most prevalent than males, and increase with age. Diabetes, Diabetic Neuropathy, Cancer, post-Herpetic Neuralgia related to Herpes Zoster, HIV, and spinal injury is the common risk factors with the prevalence reached 10-20%, 40-50%, 16.8%, 4.3-30%, 11%. 26-34.2%, respectively. The worldwide total cost to treat this condition reached $600 billion or about 8000 trillion rupiah per year. Moreover, this condition decreases all the quality of life components including health status, mental status, activity, sleep, and productivity than other's severe chronic pain.
