Abstract

The rapid developments in information and communication Technologies caused to significant changes in the field of reading. Reading based on print materials has changed and been replaced by such skills as "screen reading" and "thinking based on screen". It is claimed that in the following years, computers will be more and more widespread, students will completely stop using printed books and focus on screen reading. The advantages and disadvantages of this is still examined. Studies indicate significant differences between reading from paper and screen reading. These are mostly on the eye movements, attention, comprehension, thinking and cognitive skills. The fact that texts on the screen moves constantly, that the pages come one after another affect the eyes and minds of the reader and that makes finding and remembering where the information is difficult. That the text on the screen is seen partially makes it difficult to combine and understand the information on the text difficult. Our minds spend more effort to combine and understand the information that is on the screen and that passed from the screen. In addition to all these difficulties of screen reading, it has significant benefits. One of them is that it improves language skills as well as cognitive and social skills. Screen reading activates various parts of our brain and develops such skills as monitoring complex ideas, controlling, multidimensional thinking, taking fast decisions etc. Thus, reading on paper, which has been in practice for years, as well as text, environment and reader type are changing. And this effects and changes both the reading culture and reading habits. Teaching students screen and e-book reading should be considered in the process of education as much as reading print materials and our students should be enabled to be ready for complex technologies of the future.
