Deciphering the NRM-Violence Connection

Abstract

In the area of NRM violence, David G. Bromley is best known for his analysis of such violence in terms of what he refers to as "dramatic denouements," whose core structure is a four-stage processual model of interactive conflict amplification: (1) latent tension, (2) nascent conflict, (3) intensified conflict, and (4) dramatic denouement. This chapter discusses internal movement traits-sometimes referred to as endogenous (as opposed to exogenous) factors-that have been linked to NRM-related violence: millennialism, totalistic organization, and charismatic leadership. This finely tuned analysis throws new light on these movement characteristics.
