Abstract

The paper ‘Evidence for a moderate spin from X-ray reflection of the high-mass supermassive black hole in the cluster-hosted quasar H1821 + 643’ was published in MNRAS 514, 2568–2580 (2022). In this paper, we set bounds on the properties of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the centre of the H1821 + 643 quasar on the basis of using X-ray reflection methods to study the iron band of a Chandra LETG/HETG observation of this extraordinarily luminous quasar. In particular, our analysis led to constraining: the SMBH spin, quantified through the dimensionless spin parameter a *, and the inclination and iron abundance of the inner accretion disc. After the publication of the paper, two missing references were disco v ered. These references are specified as follows. (i) In section 1, there is a missing reference to Yaqoob & Serlemitsos ( 2005 ), who presented an analysis of the LETG/HETG data employed throughout our study that is most pertinent to our work. These authors used the LETG/HETG data to study the iron-K emission line, finding it to be broadened and identifying a possible absorption line. Importantly, the Yaqoob & Serlemitsos ( 2005 ) study highlighted the ability of the LETG to study the iron-K band. (ii) Where a reference to chaotic accretion is made in our paper (e.g. in the penultimate paragraph of section 1), a citation to King, Pringle & Hofmann ( 2008 ) should have been included. Importantly, King et al. ( 2008 ) predicted the mean value of a *to decrease slowly with an increase in SMBH mass due to chaotic accretion.
