Abstract
Forensic social work is a new field in South Africa. There is a growing need to utilize experts in courts, but social workers are not trained to provide in this need. This study investigated the availability of forensic training for social workers at seventeen universities in order to develop guidelines for forensic training programmes. The universities agreed that statutory social work forms part of the duty of social workers but that the existing training does not prepare them for effective services to the courts. The universities regard forensic social work as a specialisedfield, which requires, post-graduate training.
