Abstract
Surgical wound healing is an important aspect of the process of recovery from any operation. It is a tightly controlled biological process which includes hemostasis, inflammation, growth and maturation and remodeling. A range of systemic and local factors affects this process which commonly results in slow healing and postoperative complications. The following paper identifies factors influencing the process of wound healing among 150 surgical patients. Particularly, patient-related factors included age, diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, smoking and obesity while the choice of the surgical intervention and postoperative variables addressed infection control and wound care. The findings lay down increased wound healing time across the diabetic patients and smokers, and increased rates of wound infection and dehiscence in the obese patients. Adherence to rigorous and preventive infection control measures significantly enhanced the result, minimizing new lesions and accelerating recovery time by using recommendations for improved wound care. Taken together, the data from the current work offer a conceptual framework for patient specific interventions that will enhance postoperative wound care and healing while decreasing the socioeconomic costs of postoperative wound related complications.
