Should L2 reading instruction be comprehension-based or language-based? Response to Taylor’s comment

Abstract

The article examines teaching methods for reading instruction to second language (L2) learners. Comprehension-strategy based and language-skills based approaches are the two most commonly used in this regard. The author discusses the difficulties of transferring first language (L1) reading strategies to L2 instruction, their effectiveness, and differences at the linguistic, individual, and socio-cultural level. Researching L1 skills relevant to L2 reading is considered the best teaching method.
