Abstract

This research discusses about the efforts to prevent and decrease material abuse at Ministry of Education and Culture Library including: theft, vandalism, mutilation and unauthorized borrowing. The aims of this study is to find out and reveal how the library do all the efforts to prevent the abuse of library collection. There is two security systems using in this library. First is physical security system including: perimeter and grounds, and electronic security system like tattle tape, security gate, CCTVs and RFID. And the second is procedural security system including: photocopying service, adding more collections, staffs patrol, regulation and user education. This is a qualitative research. The data obtained through observation, in-depth interview and unstructured, support by library collection preservation expert. The results shows, all the security systems applied in the library goes pretty well to protect and prevent the collections from abusing. To optimalize security system, the library needs to add more staffs to run the systems. The library is need to rearrange the rooms such as staff rooms or any specific area to more facilitate supervision and make a few special regulation as a sanctions to users or staffs who does material abuse.
