Abstract

Sargassum sp. is a widespread seaweed in Indonesian waters, although its bioactive compounds are not yet fully utilized. The total phenolics and flavonoids levels and antioxidants of Sargassum sp. in South Sulawesi waters was investigated in this research. The extraction method involves a graded maceration approach using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvents, followed by evaporation to concentrate and dry the sample. The resulting extract was then analyzed for phytochemistry, total phenolics and flavonoids levels, and DPPH method antioxidant. The results show that the extracts of n-hx, Et-OAc, and Me-OH from Sargassum sp. have total phenolics and flavonoids levels respectively 13.0597; 21.1265; 16.2816 mg QE/g sample and 129.6739; 161.7391; 145.4348 mg QE/g sample. n-hx, Et-OAc, and Me-OH extracts of Sargassum sp. have antioxidant activity with IC50 values respectively 134.2009; 114.1173; 122.1069 ppm. The three extracts have the same antioxidant category, namely the medium category.
