Detection by frequency analyzer of individual wolves howling in a chorus: A preliminary report

Abstract

The technique is described of detecting with a real time frequency analyzer the number of wolves howling in a chorus. Sixty-six spectra of choral “basic howls” have been analysed: 60 proved the reliability of this technique showing the fundamental frequency and harmonically related overtones of each animal’s howl. The method described can be a useful technique in censusing wolves. However, further tests are planned to check the method’s reliability using recordings made under field conditions. © 1982 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
