Abstract
Crrpillrriu bollis is redescribed from material obtained from the small intestine of the red deer (Cervus elrrpllus) in France. C. bovis is parasitic in numerous species of ruminants (Bovidae, Cervidae, Antilocapridae and Camelidae) and occurs worldwide; it seems that C. bovis has never been frequent in cattle, even though it was originally described from them, and antihelminthic treatments make that it is currently rare in cattle. The text of the original description by SCHNYDE(R1 906) is reproduced in this paper, at it is not widely accessible. In the material studied here, the male is 14-16,6mm in length. the spicule is 1 100-1 200pm long and has a posterior tapered extremity. The cirrus is non-spiny. The caudal bursa, 50pm in width, is supported by two projections curved anteriorly at their extreiiiity. The caudal alae are 230-270 pm in length and 40-60 pm in width ; a ventral crest, 8-1 5 !lm in width, extends from the cloacal opening to 600ym beyond it. The genital apparatus is described in detail : the intestine fuses with the genital duct, mid way along the ejaculatory canal. The female is 24.7-78,91nin in length. The eggs (50- 54 x 24-27 ym) show superficial striations. Large swellings of the cuticle surround the vulva, and small dilatations of the cuticle are present in the region around the vulva; these two structures exhibit a great variability within the material examined. C. brevipes Ransom, 191 1, and C. lotlgipes Ransom, 191 1. are junior synonyms of C. bovis.
