Abstract
The term high‐potential leaders (shortened to hipos ) has come into increasing use. Charan explains what hipos should do to move into and through the leadership pipeline of an organization. He outlines such activities as disciplined delving into information about customers and competitors, while paying attention to such areas as “geopolitics, the global financial system, social and demographic trends, and government regulation.” Charan draws on case studies from the likes of Japanese “fast fashion” retailer Uniqlo, and describes the benefits of keeping up with technology, and observing one's company from the perspective of a competitor. Hipos are well‐equipped to understand today's new world, where “power has passed to the consumer.”.
