Cultural identity, social relations and peace building in the Perijá mountain range (Colombia)

Abstract

Introduction: The research on Cultural Identity, Social Relations and Peacebuilding in the Perijá Mountains (Colombia) explores the territorial and social dynamics in this region, analyzing the relationship between cultural identity, social relations and peacebuilding. Methodology: Qualitative approaches such as ethnography, social cartography, participant observation and semi-structured interviews were integrated, applied to groups and individuals from the Yukpa and peasant communities. Results: The findings revealed a rich cultural diversity and a strong connection of the groups with the land, manifested in agricultural practices, rituals and beliefs. In addition, traditional and modern practices for conflict transformation were identified. Discussion: The historical and current tensions between the Yukpa people and peasant communities are reflected in everyday life, affecting their social relations and peacebuilding. Cultural identity has been key in their relationship with other cultures, marked by the struggle for preservation. Conclusions: Cultural identity and social relations in the Serranía del Perijá are fundamental to understanding the peace processes in the region, and their preservation is vital for coexistence and conflict resolution.
