A Conceptual Framework for Supply Chain Coordination and Sustainable Development in the Malaysian Cattle Sector

Abstract

The sustainability of the livestock supply chain is increasingly vital in addressing challenges faced by the cattle sector, particularly in emerging economies such as Malaysia. This study develops a conceptual framework to strengthen supply chain coordination and promote sustainable development in the Malaysian cattle industry. To establish the framework, a combined bibliometric and conceptual analysis was conducted using 799 Scopus-indexed documents published between 2020 and 2025 related to supply chain coordination, business performance, and sustainability. The bibliometric findings indicate a steady increase in research interest, particularly in themes such as operational coordination, digital transformation, and resilience, highlighting the growing relevance of this topic. Building upon these insights, the proposed framework emphasizes stakeholder collaboration, information sharing, and formal contractual mechanisms as key drivers of efficiency and sustainability. Integrating the Triple Bottom Line perspective, it links economic performance with environmental and social responsibility, thereby advancing a more resilient and inclusive cattle supply chain. This study contributes to existing literature by positioning coordination not merely as an operational process but as a strategic foundation for achieving sustainable transformation in Malaysia s livestock sector.
