Abstract
Somatostatin was first suggested for the treatmentof acute pancreatitis more than 15 yearsago but despite many studies, its role in themanagement ofthis condition remains unclear. The experimental and clinical studies arereviewed and the physiological actions ofsomatostatin, which may influence the courseof acute pancreatitis are examined. It is concludedthat although some reports suggest atrend towards improved survival and lessened complication rate with somatostatin treatment, insufficient evidence of benefit exists to supportthe use of somatostatin or its analogue inthe treatment or prophylaxis against acutepancreatitis in routine clinical practice.
