Abstract

The development of substations as one of the electrical energy distribution in DKI Jakarta is carried out in line with the increasing demand for electricity in the capital city. Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) is a form of technological development from conventional substations to overcome land limitations. Consideration for underground space use was carried out because the construction of GIS also encountered obstacles when space could be provided was still unable to meet the minimum area requirement. All parts of the building will be designed below the ground to reduce open space use. The convenience perception of working in underground space influences the design and method of implementing underground GIS buildings. This research used a building layout compared with data of indicators from the previous research. Heat demand, temperature and humidity, vibration, electrical radiation, and decoration affected the design and physic of the building while the preference of changes, cultural environment, and habituation and self-adjustment were factors that can be derived from the worker's perception of underground GIS. The research shows that although this GIS is built underground, its area is still needed to be adjusted to the number and activity of the workers inside. Limited ventilation can be replaced by an air flow-control system that is designed to meet the thermal building requirement. Decoration plays an important role to make positive perception and enhance habituation and self-adjustment to work in underground GIS. Correlation between the convenience of work and design of an underground GIS building is needed to make this meet the sustainable building.
