Abstract

This special issue explores the connected histories of France, Britain, and the Pacific in the 19th and early 20th centuries at the level of states, colonial administrations, people, practices, and discourses. We have two core aims: firstly, to broaden the horizons of enquiry of emerging histories of transimperial connection; and secondly, to address the Pacific as more than a mere backdrop to these connections by highlighting the role of the ocean, its islands, and its peoples in shaping the fluctuating dynamics of power across empires.
