Abstract
Background: Professional nursing values and intercultural sensitivity are significant forces in providing patient-centred care. However, there is a need for a study that demonstrates the relationships between these variables through hypothetical models. In this regard, this research examines the effect of professional nursing values on patient-centred care competencies through the mediating role of intercultural sensitivities among senior student nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using structural equation modeling. 799 senior student nurses who volunteered to participate in the research were included from six universities in six regions of Türkiye. Data were collected online between May 15 and July 15, 2023. Data were collected using a structured information form, the Turkish versions of The Nurses’ Professional Values Scale—Revised, Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, and Patient-Centred Care Competency Scale. A hypothesized model was tested using path analysis. Results: Professional nursing values had a direct positive impact on intercultural sensitivity (β = 0.379, p < 0.001), and intercultural sensitivity had a direct positive impact on patient-centred care competency (β = 0.213, p < 0.001). Furthermore, professional nursing values directly impacted patient-centred care competency (β = 0.398, p < 0.001). On the other hand, intercultural sensitivity partially mediated the relationship between professional nursing values and patient-centred care competency (β = 0.081, 95% CI of 0.051–0.113). Conclusions: Patient-centred care competency is positively affected by professional nursing values. Intercultural sensitivity partially mediates this effect among senior student nurses. The findings of this study can inform the development of educational strategies and interventions for developing patient-centred care competencies of senior student nurses. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.
