Abstract

Discusses methods for studying the epidemiology of schizophrenia, including studies on prevalence, incidence, hospital admissions, case registries, multi-center trials, age at initiation, gender differences, and disease course. The results of many epidemiological studies of schizophrenia in Brazil indicate an incidence of 4 new cases/yr/10,000 inhabitants, rare appearance of schizophrenia prior to puberty or after age 50 yrs, and an earlier appearance in men compared to women.
