Abstract

Reviews the book "The Adult with Down Syndrome: A New Challenge for Society" edited by Jean A. Randal, Alberto Rasore-Quartino and Salvatore Sorest (2004). This book is produced from elaborations of invited presentations in the Second International Symposium on Down Syndrome that took place in San Marino, May 9-11, 2002. It aims at summarizing a large amount of updated research on issues related to adults with Down syndrome. It is divided into four sections. Section I consists of only one chapter, which is devoted to epidemiology. Section II focuses on a series of biomedical issues, which include genetics, endocrinology, growth retardation, congenital heart disease, ageing and Alzheimer's disease. Section III contains five chapters, which cover cognition and language. The last section is in fact a rather miscellaneous section. It deals with sexuality, education, rehabilitation and some other psychosocial issues such as family involvement and evaluation of treatment outcomes. This book is a source of reference for readers seeking updated knowledge on Down syndrome. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
