Abstract

The paper presents an application of the wavelet transform in machinery diagnostics. The theoretical background and some basic properties of the wavelet transform are given. The method is implemented and validated by a series of simulated numerical examples. Finally the method is applied to the detection of a damaged tooth in a spur gear. A fault detection algorithm is presented, based on a similarity analysis of patterns obtained from the modulus of the wavelet transform. © 1994 Academic Press, Limited.
