Fanfiction, drillability, and transmedia exploration: reimagining the Joker’s narrative

Abstract

Transmedia storytelling has increasingly destabilized the traditional binary between heroism and villainy by enabling complex character development across multiple platforms. This paper examines how such storytelling, alongside participatory fan cultures, reshapes the villain archetype through a case study of the Joker, long emblematic of chaotic malevolence in the DC Comics universe. Focusing on the Wattpad fanfiction Broken Steel (2023) by Adorablejoker89, the study applies the frameworks of drillability and worldbuilding to explore how grassroots narratives recalibrate the moral architecture of established fictional worlds. Wattpad’s user-generated format fosters alternative character arcs that challenge conventional authorial control. Through textual analysis, Broken Steel reimagines the Joker as a morally ambivalent, even collaborative figure who allies with Batman and other canonical heroes. This reorientation reflects a broader cultural shift in villain representation, driven by fan agency and digital affordances. The findings illuminate how fanfiction operates as a site of ideological negotiation and character rehabilitation within 21st-century transmedia ecosystems.
