Abstract

The struggle to maintain the Indonesian independence took place in various regions, including in Yogyakarta. Muhammadiyah as an Islamic organization helped to defend Indonesian independence through the struggle of the Muslim clerics. The clerics of Muhammadiyah formed the Sabil War Troop (Askar Perang Sabil/APS) and the Muslim Headquarter of Sabil War Troop (Markas Ulama Askar Perang Sabil/MUAPS) in order to maintain Indonesian independence. During Military Aggression I, Muhammadiyah deployed APS for the first time to the battle front in Mranggen and Srondol. During Military Aggression II, Muhammadiyah worked closely with TNI to defend Indonesian independence in Yogyakarta. This research uses qualitative analysis techniques, namely analysis based on the causal relationship of historical phenomena in the particular of time and place. The results show that the peak of Muhammadiyah clerics participation in the physical revolution was when they helped TNI in the General Offensive of 1 March in 1949 by preventing the Dutch troops enter to Yogyakarta.
