Abstract

It has been understood as a common sense that petroleum can be oxidized by the microorganisms in the presence of molecular oxygen. In contrast, we isolated an extremely interesting bacterium strain HD-1 which could assimilate petroleum under anaerobic condition. The bacterium could grow on CO2 as a sole carbon source, and produced n-alkane/alkene, major components of petroleum. © 1998, Japanese Society of Microbial Ecology & The Japanese Society of Soil Microbiology.
